This is from my books comin up. it also coincides with Vampyre Species--alot journal entry... and yes, S.D.Lee will be my author title

“Ravenheart” Vampires

In the Ravenheart series, by S. D. Lee, vampires (homines vampyrus) were named and characterized after vampires from worldwide myths and legends. The only difference was a few of the characteristics S. D. Lee gave them. They are the main characters in the series, and rulers of the Underworld. They live on the planet Haimatonia, named after the Nethist (main religion of the Underworld, mixed with Paganism and a bit of Christianity, where the main gods are five male and five female dragons representing the elements) goddess of life, death, wisdom, and divinity.

S. D. Lee basically made his vampires by mixing Old World folklore and mythology with Anne Rice’s “the Vampire Chronicles” vampires and Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” vampires for the most part. There are bits and pieces of other fantasy vampires in there, too.

In refernece to Twilight:

• Vampires have reflections.

• They prefer not to be seen in daylight (though, they don’t sparkle).

• Newly turned vampires are at their strongest after becoming vampires due to the excess human blood (it is for this reason that most fledglings are drained to the point of death before being turned so they don’t loose control in front of their sires).

• They can eat and drink normal human food but can’t digest it properly (so they either regurgitate it or sweat it out).

• They can crush metal and move faster than the human eye can see.

• Vampires have their own unique special abilities (but they practically have the same overall powers, just are stronger with some over other vampires).

• They have pale and ice cold skin.

• Their eyes change color from thirst (and emotion).

• Turned vampires don’t age.

• The Baobhan Sith have teeth like them; razor sharp from one angle but human-like from another.

• They can turn mortals into vampires with their venom.

• Some vampires, like the Cullens, refer to themselves as “vegitarian vampires” cuz they only feed on lesser animals.

• They have a bit of a disliking for lycanthropes, particularly werewolves.

• Becoming a vampire is a painful process.

• It is considerably easier for a vampire to kill another vampire, rather than a human to kill one.

• They are not harmed by religious relics (though if a person has strong faith, he/she could create a strong psychic barrier which masy repel some vampires).

In refernce to the Vampire Chronicles:

• They have reflections.

• They have a heartbeat when they feed and their pulse stays in rhythm with their victim’s heartbeat.

• They have pale and ice cold skin.

• They have luminous eyes of their own color.

• They can move faster than human eyes can see.

• They sleep during the day (even though sunlight doesn’t harm them).

• Turned vampires don’t age.

• They seek affection and for a companion.

• The Loogaroo have teeth like them; fangs where their canines are and smaller fangs around them.

• They keep their nails and hair preferable long (but they can trim them and grow them back at will).

• They can turn mortals into vampires by forcing them to drink their blood.

• Some vampires, like Louis as he started out as a vampire, only fed on lesser animals.

• Becoming a vampire is a painful process (though more like this than from Twilight).

• Turned vampires emty their body of any digested waste (and anything that’s not yet digested is regurgitated or sweated out)

• It is considered a crime to kill another vampire (unless justifiable).

• Some vampire species can’t hide their fangs and have to open their mouth as little as possible when hiding what they are.

• They are not harmed by religious relics (though if a person has strong faith, he/she could create a strong psychic barrier which masy repel some vampires).

In refernce to Blade:

• Vampires have reflections.

• Vampirism is considered a type of virus that spread to humanity like a form of rabies and cancer.

• Vampires are more of a biological species, rather than supernatural beings.

• Born vampires are stronger than turned vampires in the long run (as they have better controll of their powers).

• Vampires (like Drake in the Blade series) can shapeshift due to lots of tiny bones, like snake bones, through their body. And some can split their bottom jaw like a snake (like Drake and the Reapers) (but they can also appear to shapeshift with the use of an aura cloaking for small transformations).

• They can turn mortals into vampires by bitting them.

• Vampires can bare and retract their fangs at will.

• They do often have human familiars (as well as lesser animal familiars and a variety of daemons and demon familiars).

• Born vampires sometimes discriminate turned vampires.

• Vampires have their own language that they often speak to each other through (but there’s a pattern on how to speak it from human languages).

• They are not harmed by religious relics (though if a person has strong faith, he/she could create a strong psychic barrier which masy repel some vampires).

In refernce to Underworld:

• They have reflections.

• Their eyes change color when harmed or while baring their fangs.

• They have a bit of a disliking for lycanthropes, particularly werewolves.

• Vampires can gain the memories of others by drinking their blood (the closer to the mind the better the knowledge gained).

• Vampire hybrids who are vampire dominant show more of their vampire heritage than the other species mix.

• They are not harmed by religious relics (though if a person has strong faith, he/she could create a strong psychic barrier which masy repel some vampires).

Vampires can be born or turned. When born, a vampire can only be born when a human/witch/elf/ dwarf has been stillborn (supposing that the infint vampire was that stillborn child). A pregnant vampiress will carry a stillborn child in her until her offspring is born dead as a human elsewhere. After the newly born’s death its soul and spirit passes on and posseses the body of the vampire embryo, giving it life. The vampires can age every century just as a human can every year. If turned, however, vampires will not age. They will remain the age they were when they died. Some zombie vampires, like the nachzehrer and the blutsaugers, would decay slightly with every century, born or turned. This could be a form of aging, but more likely, the vampires aren’t strong enough to keep from rotting away. If turned, the fledgling can be turned back to what they once where in their previous life if they chose, but the spell for this was extremely difficult and almost impossible to perform. The ex-vampire, along with their spouse, would turn into vampires after death. But if the transformation was successful, any offspring that ex-vampire may have will become vampires after death. That next generation would bear children in life and they would become dhampyrs after death. And the following generation would have human children that would remain human unless turned by another vampire.

A fledgling, or turned vampire, can be turned in numerous ways. The most common is by being bitten and then an exchange of bodily fluids between the vampire and his/her victim. A vampire’s saliva is filled with venom, so toxic that it is considered to be the most toxic venom in existence, along with werewolf and gorgon venom- at the same time it is considered one of the most severe form of rabies. The venom is considered so potent because immortality is considered as a form of death- the greatest form, for good or bad. For some vampires, however, their venom is not potent enough to turn their victim, only make then weak and, most of the time, fall ill. Rarely, the venom will only turn the victim into a vampire after the vampire has taken enough blood night after night for the victim to eventually die during a feeding. Other times, a vampire seeking to sire a fledgling will exchange his/her own body fluid, usually blood but occasionally (depending on the species) other fluids exchanged through sexual activity, and the venom in that fluid will either turn the victim or mark them to be turned after death- returning to the age they were marked. The least common form is to be cursed as a vampire after death- either by a vampire lifestyle, a sacrilegious or misfortunate way of life.

After turned, a newly born fledgling is said to be the strongest of all. Like in the “Twilight” series, this is due to all of the human blood still corsing through the vampire’s veins. However, the blood is soon contaminated with the vampire’s venom that the heart stops beating and the vampire will have to feed shortly. A vampire will have to be on extreme amounts of blood, over two whole victims a night, in order to sustain the strength of a newly turned fledgling.

It is hard to determine whether vampires can be documented as an actual species or a cause of a fatal plague. As the disease/curse of vampirism is spread like rabies, the forms of the conditions have evolved. The first vampires, supposedly, were said to have been fallen victim from a rare, unexplained disease that reanimated them after their deaths. The disease became a curse that required cravings of life forces, either from blood (sanguinarians), energy (energy vampires), spirit or soul (psyichic vampires), or energy and life force taken through sexual activity (sex vampires). This nourishment does not usually keep the vampires alive, only keeps up their strength and santity.

There are, however, some vampire species that are actually considered to be a species. The redcap, which is a fiend, or false undead creature, and the kappa, which is alive and a native wild animal of Asia. Neither can be turned from mortal creatures, only born. Also, the chupacabra is a species in the the vampire bloodline; there are three subspecies of chupacabras: chupacabras desmodus (descrided as a mix between a bat, a kangaroo and a porcupine), chupacabras lycanthropus (described as a wild dag thought to have mange), and chupacabras raptorus (the classical green, reptilian chupacabra). These species might have been the source that spread vampirism to humans and witches- along with parasites that may have come in contact with them.

Vampire species are also categorized by what they feed off of. Notably, vampires feed off of a life force. Sanguinarians (cadavarus sangues), most commonly recognized vampires, are vampires that feed off of blood. Psychic vampires (vampyrus anima) are vampires that feed off of a person’s aura (spiritual energy) either mentally or with brief physical contact. Energy/sexual vampires (vampyrus energus) are similar to psychic vampires but feed off a person’s energy through more direct physical contact, primarily sex (this is called the incubus/succubus act). Astral vampires (vampyrus cadavarus anima) are vampires that can astral project their souls/spirits out of their bodies while sleeping to go out and feed on whatever life force they require. The spirit returns to the body, supplying it with the essence of the life force. There is some confusion as to whether or not elemental vampires are actual vampires; as they do not feed off of a life force but powers and the energy of the elements. If they were to require an element found within an organism that required it to live (like salt or water) and preferred to vampirize the element from victims, then the elemental vampire would be an actual vampire.

Vampire hybrids differ due to what species they’re mixed with. Dhampyrs are only created when a born crossed between a vampire and one of the background races (human/witch/elf/dwarf), but they can only be born like this, not turned. Dhampyrs can turn others into full vampire fledglings. If mixed with other plague infested races, such as lycanthropes or felianthropes (cat people), they can either be born or turned like this. But they must be turned, not born, into one species in order to be mixed with the other. They can carry traits from both sides, often all strengths gained and no weaknesses deleted from the other species.

Vampires share many physical characteristics that can be used to differentiate each one individually, just as humans. In reference to a human, eye color can be an example of this, though the vampire’s eyes may appear more luminous or brighter: human with blue eyes, vampire with electric blue or gray eyes; human with green or blue-green eyes, vampire with bright green or lime green eyes; human with brown/hazel, vampire with purple or golden/copper.

Vampires are also characterized by their fangs. How long the fangs are may tell the age. The arrangement of the fangs, as in placement on the jaw with the other teeth, tells the species or species group. Ex: In Romania, the Strigoi (along with its cousin the Stryx, and all other strigadae-vampires descendant to it) is believed to take on the appearance of Count Graf Orlok, with two fangs over the incisors. Others Slavic vampires, like the Upir, have a jaw structure more like a vampire bat, with fangs both in place of the incisors and the canines, but possibly no teethg between them. And the Vrykolakas, Vukodlak and Varkolak have the fang alignment and jaw structure similar to that of a wolf. Ther Mjertovjec, too, shares this trait, though their teeth are a little more jagged. The baobhan sith, leanan sidhe and lhiannan shee have teeth much like the Twilight vampires (appearing normal from the front but like razors when turned to the side), though they use their talons more often to feed; the fangs are used for a more suddle approach in feeding and in sensuality. Some vampires may just have canine fangs, rows of fangs or jagged teeth, or fangs much like the vampires depicted in Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.

When shapeshifting into winged beings sometimes, quite rarely, the type of wings (bat/bird/insect-like) can interpret whether the vampire is good or evil. This is given as a special ability usually by magic or by the vampires’ strength in their powers as they get older.

A vampire’s personality could be expected out of their background race (human/elf/witch/dwarf/etc). Human/dwarf-based vampires are seen as the most greedy, power-lusting and depressing of all other vampires. They can be blindsided by the dark gift as either a terrible curse or power they can use for their own greedy needs and wants. These arrogant reactions to vampirism are seen in the majority of turned human-based vampires, rather than borned ones. Dwarf-based vampires are least common of all vampires mentioned here. Nevertheless, there are only few of them… Dwarves do not hate vampires, but are not fond of the idea of spreading vampirism. If a dwarf was to become a vampire, he/she would go through life grumpy, and more-likely go insane due to his/her stubborness not to drink any blood. Eventually this madness has been known to drive dwarf-based vampires to kill themselves. Elven-based vampires are concidered the wisest of all and don’t really differ between born vampires and fledglings. They treat vampirism as a blessing given by the gods. Witches are often coincided with vampires and their curse, as so many are vampires or become one through black magic. So, witch-based vampires are either as wise as elven-based vampires or as stubborn as human-based vampires. They are the great nomads in the magical world and the vampire community. They have the greatest keen knowledge to potions and use of magic. Also, they are the most artistically skilled vampires, though there are few others, like the human-based vampire Raoul, who are just as gifted. The strigoi are known to be vampire-witches (strigoi: vampire-warlock/wizard; strigoaica: vampire-witch), though they are not all witch-based vampires.

How a vampires shapeshifts, or what they shapeshift into, maybe directed by their personality if given a variety to choose from. As the strigoi morti will turn into some animals while others turn into other animals. For instance: Raoul turns into a carpatain wolf, while Norona turned into a black cat, and Stephen turned into a black german shepard; Raoul turned into a scorpion and a rat, while Michelle turned into a moth and a rabbit. The combination of character-catagorized animal forms represents what that individual vampire is like personally. A wolf could represent that head-strong and born-free leader, while a dog could be shown as a follower or guard.

A vampire’s mood could be shown in both their eyes and hair. Their eyes could become more luminous with excitement, or darker from boredom, depression or apathy. The vampire’s hair is charcterized by the mood they woke up in. If wavy, the vampire woke up in a good mood. Otherwise, the hair will remain straight. Throughout the night or day, if the vampire’s mood changes, his/her hair will become straight or wavy very slowly. Depending on how curly a vampire’s hair naturally is depends on how straight it’ll become when upset. Raoul put a spell on himself to make his hair stand up in spikes in a spider leg-like fashion in front, and turn black and white, whenever he became really excited or made it on command. This was mainly used for effect when he was on stage with his band.

Vampire behavior is considerably unique to that of most species. They behave much as a mix between man and beast. Sometimes, vampires may walk on their knuckles like chimps or gorillas. They even have a distinct body language. If nervous or agitated, a vampire will scratch the nearest surface around it, against its fingers, or chew on its lip. When intimidating a rival, a vampire may flash its eyes or flare their nostrils. Wiggling of the ears indicates that he/she enjoys what they see. A light snap of the jaws hints to the liking to fancy of another vampire/individual- while light chattering of the teeth, however, is more for lust. It is pointed out that occasionally vampires walk on their knuckles like gorillas, revealing their hominid background.

Vampires even have a specific mating dance that is mainly made up through choreographed serpentine movements- as performed between Norona and Raoul. The beginning of this dance can be seen in the Queen of the Damned film when Akasha approaches a male vampire in the coven before ripping out his heart.

Vampires are very vocal animals. They can mimic and create numerous varieties of sounds. They have been known to make certain noises as natural responses; each noise depending on their mood or reaction. A vampire may purr when calm or comfortable, bellow when happy, in heat or out of enjoyment (or, if threatened or intimidated, may create a loud, low bellowing sound), growl or hiss when angry, frightened or intimidated (or to intimidate), and whimper or wine when sad or depressed, screech when harmed, infuriated or scared (or to scare). Vampires also use different sounds for communication, rather than use words. An exhaling hiss is a warning to other vampires to back off or back away. Hyenas were thought to have terrorized much of the country side of Romania, but as Raoul said “we sang like wolves and cackled like hyenas to strike fear into the hearts of our weary victim” vampires can immitate a hyena’s laughter in use of hunting and calling over great distances- signalling how nearby thay were from one another. It has also been used for a distress call when a vampire feels trapped or in danger. As mentioned in the quote, vampires have been known to sing, or howl, like wolves. These cries are used to sing, in a way, and to call other vampires nearby to their aid.

Vampires, also, do not have to breathe, except when flying. Being dead, they do not require oxygen or any other life-sustaining gas. Inhaling, however, makes their lungs react to the air by mixing a helium-like chemical that makes the vampires much lighter and able to levitate. Breathing enables the vampire to remain airborn and able to fly around, even without the use of wings.

Vampires have the usual powers and abilities; scaling walls, superhuman spead (too fast for humans to see), superhuman strength, changing eye color, having an animalistic frenzy, and hiding in human society with a human guise (not always through use of shapeshifting). Not all vampires have the ability to shapshift, sprout fangs/claws, teleport, have telekinesis, fly/levitate, or have telepathy.

Vampires make the laws of their home planet. They try to be as fair as their predatory instincs will allow them to their human prey. Though, human blood is the most nutritious, vampires continue to prey on them whenever they are hungry. Cloned blood is high in the production industry, so the vampires don’t have to leave their homes for a bite to eat. Despite the fear they stike in people, they do occasionally enjoy hanging around them without disturbing anyone. People who are aware of them know to keep their distance and not to show their fear in the vampires’ presence, but do try to interact with them as if they were any other human in town… unless of course they show most humans with disrespect. The best thing for any human is to be befriended by a vampire.

The vampire hierarchy is categorized species and determined by the species’ strength, power and intelligence. The present rulers of the vampire race and the Vampire Empire are the Strigoi. They remain in conflict, however, with their jealous Greek cousins, the vrykalakai. Vampires, like the yara-ma-yha-who and the chupacabras, are near the bottom of the pecking order due to their primitive state.

Vampires live in families called clans or covens. Covens are considered bigger than clans and only the most famous known clans were called covens because they were so heavily populated and so well known.

Vampire hunters are shown basically as racists. They were humans, werewolves, or gorgons who acted towards vampires like the KKK to African Americans. In the Underworld, gorgons are the powerful, serpentine creatures that wish to wipe out the vampire race and enslave all others. They tricked lycanthropes, one of the greatest allies that already were on edge to trusting vampires, into fihghting against them- unaware of the gorgons’ involvement.

As in legend, no vampire can be harmed by sunlight. If they were then that would mean vampires were vulnerable to radiation poisoning. Certain vampires, however, like the mannananggal and the penaggalan, had to go to sleep before the time the sun came up. This was all because their powers and vampirism was strong during the night, but rarely active during the day. Therefore, if still detached from their bodies they would die like a human or common vampire would without its lower half. These two vampires could remain awake while guised as normal people during the day, while other vampires who were thought to be intolerant to sunlight are simply dead during the day. For the night holds the power to wake the dead and the moon gives them energy- while the day and the sunlight take it away and cannot give the corpses the energy they need. But no vampire has been known to burn in daylight… with the exception of Albert.

In belief, vampires are warded off by holy relics and chanting. In the Ravenheart universe, however, vampires are not so vulnerable. Crosses, holy water, church grounds, and the bible and words or phrases from the bible do not harm vampires one bit. Some vampires, rarely, fear these things as they are sacrilegious to their own beliefs. In the A. L. (After Life) and A. D. (After Death) eras, vampires were hunted and often crucified as part of their execution. Crosses bring a heavy reminder of those days before the Vampire Empire came to power. As part of the vampirial Nethist belief due to this history, crosses and other Christian symbols are sacrilegious and go against the mother goddess Haimatonia. When a vampire has committed a terrible crime and is punished, by vampire societry, they are crucified, staked, burned, and then beheaded.

Another reason why holy relics may seem to be effective against vampires is due to the person’s faith and will power. It’s actually a mental/telekinetic shield some people possess in order to keep themselves from harm. This may work on other creatures than just vampires as well.

Vampires are immune to curses or possession and most spells, unless they consent to the enchantment. There are, however, some vampires who are handicaps due to curses placed on them before they were vampires. When born, a vampire could have been cursed while in the human mother’s womb before becoming stillborn. Sometimes, this stillbirth was caused due to the curse placed upon them. But it’s very difficult to place such a curse on a vampire to be, because there’s no telling who will become a vampire after dying at birth. Therefore, very few vampires have been cursed at birth- and thanks to their highly developed immune system, they could get by through life with the curse in them to where it won’t be fatal. Same rules follow for fledgelings who were cursed as humans with magic meant to affect them after death or as immortals. Only five vampires are named with these conditions: Raoul, Stephen, Albert, Lord Vigirox, and possibly Vlad Dracula.

Before the Vampire Empire became a whole, it was once broken up into four empires; the Northern Empire (equal to the Greek and Roman empires), the Southern/Mediterranean Empire (equal to the Egyptian empire), the Western Empire (equal to the Mayan and Aztec empires), and the Eastern Empire (equal to the Chinese empire). These empires controlled their own lands; their individual continents. And they were ruled by a dominant race of vampires. The Northern Empire, ruled by the vrykolakoi; the Southern/Mediterranean Empire, ruled by the obayifos; the Western Empire, ruled by the cihuateteos; and the Eastern Empire, ruled by the asrapas. When a war broke out all across Haimatonia, the empires began to crumble. Each king or queen was after the expansion of their rule. The feud lasted for four millenia.

In this time, Agmond Caesar, the emperor of the vrykolakoi, lost his queen by an assassin after him. In a hurry to have a mate by his side, he chose Aeonei, the high priestess of the striges. Striges were second ranking race of northern vampires- they were the councilors, the guardians, and the oracles of the vrykolakoi. A union of the bloodlines, vrykolakas and stryx, created a new breed of vampire- the strigoi, Mirceas. Born in the heart of Vania, where Agmond was in hiding, Mirceas grew up in the teachings of his stryx mother. As the centuries progressed, Mirceas discovered the truth behind his father’s power and plans for his war, which he started. Two millennia old, and after their return to Kross, Mircea stood up against his father, trying to make him see reason that what he has done is immoral, and something only a human would choose. By this insult, Mirceas was sentenced to death, but managed to escape for exhile. He spent the centuries growing an army. He made more of his kind with the peasants and nobles of Vania. After confronting the Western Emperess, Cihuacoatl, and the Mediterranean Emperess, Akshall, they joined forces with Mirceas and they fought the armies of Kali Jiasu and Agmond Caesar. Mirceas killed his father and all the leaders of each race made a pact that united every species of the vampire race under one empire- the Vampire Empire. In this agreement, Mirceas was declared Voivode of the empire, and the strigoi were now the dominant species. His new castle/palace home was set up in Whallchia, Vania. But the war caused too much damage to the vampires’ population and reputation, so Mirceas declared that they should give the chanc eof power to the humans. For centuries this decision has been viewed by many the greatest mistake made. The human race nearly wiped out the vampires, and soon forgot about their existance. And it wasn’t until thousands of years later, when Vlad Dracula seized control and became a vampire, when the Vampire Empire began to rebuild itself, under the terms of the old pact.
